University Professors' time is expected to cover Research, Teaching and Service activities. Service to the University and community is essential, especially, in a university that is built on shared governance. It is in our hands to make things better for ourselves and others through serving on committees and other activities. Spending time in such service is expected not only to ethically justify our paycheck, but it is what makes one a citizen of this university and community. Not properly participating in such activities would leave more weight for others to carry, which is a form of selfishness and injustice leading to low faculty morale. Hence every professor should carry their share. Caring is sharing :)
